This is a timeline about the early major events that helped to shape the Utah that we know today.

Shoshone Indians

The Shoshone Indians traveled with their families. They primarily ranged between the north part of Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho. They traveled around these places to hunt, fish, and gather.

Goshute Indians

Goshute Indians may have arrived in Utah between 12,000 B.C. and 400 A.D. It's not known exactly when. They lived in the desert parts south of the Great Salt Lake.

Paiute Indians

The Paiute Indians were said to have entered Utah between 1100 A.D. and 1200 A.D. They lived in southwestern Utah, the Great Basin Area, and the Colorado Plateau

Navajo Indians

Navajo Indians are said to have actually entered Utah territory in 900 A.D. but we know that close to the end of the 1500's they lived in the north part of New Mexico, southern Utah, and northern Arizona.

Ute Indians

It's not known exactly when the Ute Indians entered Utah territory, but by the end of the 1500's, Utes had inhabited much of Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico.

The Rivera Expedition

In 1765 the Spanish wanted to expand their empire. The Spanish government hired Native Americans to explore what we now know as America.

Dominguez-Escalante Expedition

Two Franciscan priests with 8 other men lead an expedition The two leaders who lead the expedition were named Fathers Francisco Dominguez and Silvestre Velez de Escalante. They went on a 6 month journey trying to find overland routes between Santa Fe and California.

Louisiana Purchase

In 1803 the United States doubled their country size when they purchased the Louisiana territory from the French people. This Purchase would eventually lead to 15 different states being formed.

American Indian Relocation Act

The Indian Removal Act was a law that passed in 1830 and was signed by the 7th President of the United States, Andrew Jackson. This law was supposed to offer American Indians a trade of something for their lands.

The Trail of Tears

After Congress passing the American Indian Relocation Act, the removal didn't take place until 1831 a year after the law was past. The removal began with Choctaw and ended with the Cherokee Indians in 1838.

Westward Expantion

By the 1840's more than 7 million Americans had migrated to the west, so they could secure land and their prosperity.

The Mormon Migration

With the Transcontinental Railroad built, over 70,000 Mormons were able to migrate to the Salt Lake Valley. They did this along the Mormon trail.

Founding Salt Lake City

On July 24, 1847, Salt Lake City was founded. The Mormon pioneers were being led by Brigham Young. The Mormon pioneers were the first non-Indian people that settled in the salt Lake Valley permanently.

Utah Territory

In 1850 Utah became a territory instead of a state. Although they didn't get statehood, like many wanted, they were now an official political part of the United States.

Utah Becomes a State!

On January 4, 1896, President Grover Cleveland proclaimed Utah a state. Utah Become the 45th state.

1914-07-28 00:00:00

World War 1

World War 1 started on July 28 1914, by the assassination of Franz Ferdinand. It was a global war that was mostly in Europe. The war lasted 4 years and ended on November 11, 1918.

1939-09-03 00:00:00

World War 2

World War 2 was started with an attack on Poland by Germany. This attack lead to the Allies (Britain, the Soviet Union, the United States, and other countries) declaring war on the Axis (Germany, Italy, and Japan) The war continued until July 1, 1945.
