Anasazi People
The Anasazi people lived in the region. They inhabited the Four Corners where Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona meet. They built their houses in pits, planted crops for food, and made baskets and sandals.

Drought
In the 1300's the Anasazi people disappeared from the region. There was a drought that lasted about 100 years which caused the Anasazi to move east and southward, which is now New Mexico and Arizona.

Two Fransiscian Fathers Francisco Atanasio Dominguez and Silvestre Velez de Escalante explored the land. They were trying to establish a route between Santa Fe and Monterey, California

The Adam-Onis Treaty
By The Adam-Onis Treaty of 1819 between the United States and Spain, the large area of which Utah was a part was officially recognized as a Spanish possession

In the 1820's the mountain men were in search of rich beaver streams and explored the region.

Mexico Takes Control
Mexico becomes independent from Spain and takes control of the territory of Utah.

Jim Bridger
Jim Bridger was the first European who discovered the Great Salt Lake.

California-bound Immigrants
In 1841 the first California-bound group of immigrants, called the Bidwell party, left the Oregon Trail and made their way across the Great Salt Lake Desert. Several years later Miles Goodyear became Utah's first settler when he set up a trading post at the site of present-day Ogden, naming it Fort Buenaventura.

Mexican-American War
The Mexican-American War was fought in Mexico. President Polk wanted to purchase California and Southwest territories from Mexico. Mexico rejected this offer, and U.S. troops went to the border of Mexico and started the war. The War ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Under the treaty, Mexico agreed to sell California and the rest of its territory north of the Rio Grande which included Utah.

Mormon Settlement
In 1847 Mormons arrived and found Salt Lake City, and Permanent settlement began.

State of Deseret
In 1849 The Mormons founded the State of Deseret, which was the region that they sought territorial status for.

The Utah Territory
Congress rejected creating the State of Deseret, and instead they created the Utah Territory under the Compromise of 1850. Brigham Young was appointed as governor.

Walker War and Black Hawk War
The Native Americans who were dispossessed of their lands and foreseeing further intrusion, and the Mormons were threatened by the powerful Ute. This confrontation eventually lead to the Walker War which lasted from 1853–1854, and the Black Hawk War which lasted from 1865–1868. The wars ended after the federal government removed the Utes to the Uintah and Ouray Reservation in the Uinta Basin during the late 1860s and early 1870s.

The Utah War
In 1857 Brigham Young was removed from governor, and President James Buchanan took his place. Buchanan was afraid the Mormon's would resist the removal of Brigham Young, so he directed U.S. army troops to proceed against the Mormons. The Mormons prepared for warfare by calling in outlying settlers. This affair was called The Utah War, and in this war not a single shot was fired at the opposing side. Brigham Young called out the militia, who harassed the troops.The war was settled peacefully, but hard feelings had developed, and some settlers who had traveled to land south of the Utah Valley remained to spread colonization there.

On January 4, 1896 Utah was admitted into the Union as the 45th State.

In 1919 Zions National Park was established.

Flaming Gorge Dam
In 1964 The Flaming Gorge Dam was completed. It provides water storage and hydroelectric power.
