An explosive shell fired from a German long-barreled gun nearly 20 miles away smashed into the thousand-year-old cathedral of Verdun The next 9 hrs explosives rained down on the French troops guarding the little city and the ring of forts around it, a bombardment on a scale never before seen in any war. "No line is to remain unbombarded," the German orders commanded, "no possibilities of supply unmolested. nowhere should the enemy feel himself safe." (Freedman 85)
