Formation of the Muslim League

Mohammad Ali Jinnah founded the Muslim League, It became instrumental in dividing India into India and Pakistan.

Effects of World War I on India War created a new economic and political situation. Huge increase in defense expenditure. Increasing taxes ; customs duties raise, IT Introduced. Increase in price : between 1913 to 1918. Forced recruitment and soldiers’ supply Crops failure- 1918-1921 – shortage of food. Famines and epidemics; according to 1921 census 12 to 13 million people died.

1919 - Khilafat Samiti

Turkey was defeated by England in the First World War. A rumour spread that Khalifa would be deposed and his temporal powers would be taken away. This angered muslims of the world. Ali Brothers - Shaukat Ali and Mohammed Ali formed Khilafat Samiti.

The British government passes the controversial Rowlatt Act, granting sweeping powers to detain and arrest individuals without trial, sparking widespread outrage.

1919 - Rowlatt Satyagraha

The British govt. hurriedly passed Rowlatt Act that gave powers to arrest any Indian political person and put in jail for two years without trial. Gandhiji organised Rowlatt Satyagraha against it

Jallianwala Bagh massacre

Thousands gathered at Jallinan wala Bagh. Some went to celebrate Baisakhi festival. Some went to oppose the Rowlatt Act and the arrest of Satyapal and Khichlu. Gen. Dyer closed the exit gate and fired on the people. Hundreds killed and thousands injured.
