Kano Eitoku

Hon'ami Koetsu

An artist of the late 16th and early 17th century who worked with pottery, lacquerer, and calligraphy. Many credit him with inspiring the founding of the Rinpa school of painting.

Hey Nanseolheon

Tawaraya Sōtatsu

He is credited with co-founding the Rinpa school of Japanese painting, with Hon'ami Koetsu. He painted the folding screens "Wing God and Thunder God," a national treasure in Japan.

Gim Myeong-guk

A painter of the mid-Joseon dynasty. He was a member of the Dohwaseo, the official painters of the Joseon court. Many of his paintings of people incorporate Buddhist themes.

Kano Tanyu

A painter of the Kano school, and grandson of Kano Eitoku. He became the first official painter of the Tokugawa shogunate. His works decorated Edo Castle, Nijo Castle, Osaka Castle, Nagoya Castle, and Nikko Tosho-gu (Tokugawa Ieyasu's tomb)

Wang Yuanqi

One of the "Four Wangs" of the Qing Dynasty

Qing Dynasty

Li Zicheng captures Beijing in 1644 with help from Manchu tribal peoples, who overthrew Zicheng to establish dynasty. Manchus adopted Chinese style govt, employed Ming officials but only Manchus were higher-level officials. Last of the Imperial dynasties of China. During the Qing, the empire tripled in size from the preceding Ming dynasty. Border expanded to include Outer Mongolia, Tibet, Duzungaria, Turkistan, and Nepal. Treaty with Russia put northern boundary at the Argun River. Many Chinese minorities were Sinicized and a national economy was established. Even though Manchus established the Qing Dynasty, they sponsored traditional Chinese arts and literature as one means gain legitimacy. Paintings by the Individualists carried a message of political protest. Courtiers, officials, and professional artists served at the Qing court.

Younger brother to Ogata Korean. One of the greatest ceramicists of the Tokugawa era.

His birth and death dates are unknown, but his paintings are dated to the reigns of Kings Sukjong and Yeongjio (1674-1776). He is famous for his paintings of cats.

Tani Buncho

A Japanese literati painter and poet. His family were descendants of the eighth Tokugawa shogun, and he had samurai status. He began painting under the Kano school, and later branched out to incorporate a variety of Chinese, Japanese, and European styles.
