CALL in 1950 and 1960 1. Computers were started to be use back in the 1950. 2. The first computers use for language learning were large mainframes that were only available at research or university campuses. 3. They were very expensive. 4. Among the first and most significant applications for the teaching and learning of English at the computer were those used on the PLATO (programmed logic/learning for automated teaching operations). Most of PLATO's language leraning work was done in teaching Russian using a grammar translation approach. The system also included rudimentary spelling and grammar checkers.

CALL in the 1970 and 1980 at this time computers were classified: 1. Mainframe computers which were room sized machines. 2. Mini-computers which were closer to what we now call servers. 3. Microcomputers which are what we would now call desktop computers or personal computers.
