Our prestigious international school was founded in 1964 by Raymond and Esther Kabbaz.
Two career educators Mr. and Mrs. Kabbaz founded Le Lycée Français de Los Angeles in 1964. Both taught at Le Lycée in New York and dreamed of opening their own Lycee on the West Coast.
Due to a California law that prohibited teaching in a language other than English, LyceeLA was delayed in opening a year. Mr. and Mrs. Kabbaz hired consultants and attorneys to lobby for a change in the education code. They succeeded in August 1965, paving the way for not only LyceeLA but also for all other multi-lingual schools and programs.
150 South Doheny Drive in Beverly Hills was the site of the first LyceeLA campus. They leased the building from Art Linkletter, a celebrated author and host of the famous show "Kids say the Darndest Things."
LyceeLA's alma mater was written and composed by Mark Fleischer - alumni and member of the first graduating class. He also spoke at the 2020 graduation.
LyceeLA students performed works by Eugene Ionesco, a French-Romanian playwright who was one of the founders of a style of drama called the Theater of the Absurd. He later visited the LyceeLA students
The Kabbaz's purchased what was originally known as the "Porter Sanitarium" and later as the "Southern California Hospital" in 1967. It was transformed it into the Main campus and an opened its doors to students in 1968.
