The AO conducted its first official course in the Middle East. The course at Ain Shams University Hospital in Cairo, Egypt, drew 26 participants. It was chaired by Prof Hassan El-Zaher (local chair) and Reinhold Ganz.
The AO conducted its second official course in the Middle East. The course took place May 13–17 at El Hadra University Hospital in Alexandria, Egypt. It was chaired by Prof Amin Reda, Prof Loutfy El-Adwar (local chairs) shown in the picture and AO founding father Hans Willenegger.
Dr Sherif Zaghloul from Egypt became the first AO Foundation Trustee from the Middle East in 1992. He served from 1992–1999.
The AO conducted the region’s first official course for operating room personnel (ORP) April 25–30, 1992, at the Cairo International Conference Centre in Cairo, Egypt. The course was chaired by Prof Hassan El-Zaher (local chair) and AO International Director of Nurse Education Anne Murphy. Pictured here are El-Zaher, Murphy, a participant, and Max Landolt.
The AO Alumni Association (AOAA) was established its Egypt chapter, with Dr Hassan El-Zaher as chairman.
The AO Trauma Iran chapter was established with Dr Issa Navab as chairman.
The AO Trauma United Arab Emirates chapter was established, with Dr Hussein Al Redha as chairman.
The AO Trauma Lebanon was established, with Dr Assad Taha as chairman.
The first regional AO Trauma Basic Principles Course was conducted in Dubai, United Arab Emirates and chaired by Prof Thomas Rüedi, Switzerland, a founding member of the AO. Since then, the course has become an annual October event that continues to this day. In 2018, nine courses were conducted during the event.
The AO Trauma Jordan chapter was established, with Dr Kamel Afifi as chairman.
