MoreA timeline tracking the history of and publications of the Studies in Writing and Rhetoric (SWR) series, including its serving editors. In addition, the timeline includes information on chairs of the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC).
The SWR Timeline is designed to allow individuals, graduate classes, and SIGs/Caucuses to reflect upon, expand, and understand the meaning and import of the collective history of the field represented by the SWR series.
This is an interactive timeline and we encourage you to contribute to its events. To add an event, please enter "SWREdit" as the secret word in the box at the lower left corner of your screen. Please contact C.C. Hendricks (crhen100@syr.edu) if you'd like to suggest additional categories or have any questions or comments.
In addition to this Timeline, SWR has also recently created an online discussion forum to invite scholars to engage in dialogue about SWR's publications.
As this year marks the 30th anniversary of James Berlin’s Rhetoric and Reality (RR), we are currently looking for individuals and groups to use this forum to offer comments and reflections on Berlin's text. The goal here is not to further canonize or rehearse critiques, but to use the book as a starting point to talk about the future work of the field. If Berlin’s text announced a set of concerns for the 1980’s, what are the primary concerns for today? And how might (or might not) Berlin’s text be useful to such work?

View on timelineThe Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) Studies in Writing & Rhetoric (SWR) series, established in 1984, aims to influence how writing gets taught at the college level. The methods of studies vary from the critical to historical to linguistic to ethnographic, and their authors draw on work in the many various fields that inform composition—including rhetoric, communication, education, discourse analysis, psychology, cultural studies, and literature. Their focuses are similarly diverse, ranging from studies of individual writers and teachers, to work on classrooms and communities and curricula, to analyses of the social, political, and material contexts of writing and its teaching.

SWR submissions were sent directly to NCTE by prospective authors and then forwarded to the committee for a decision. Approved MSS were sent to Southern Illinois UP, which handled production of the books for CCCC (until 2012, when NCTE assumed production duties for SWR books).
