Gangster Films

In this Digital Humanities project we chose to study the American Gangster films and the different genres within those films. There are many different ways of looking at the American Gangster films such as, looking at real life gangsters and their affects on the film or how changes in time affected the film. However, we chose to look at the different stages withing the American Gangster films as our scope. The four stages are as follows as discussed by Thomas Schatz in Hollywood Genres:

;xNLx;"an experimental stage, during which its conventions are isolated and established, a classic stage, in which the conventions reach their “equilibrium” and are mutually understood by artist and audience, an age of refinement, during which certain formal and stylistic details embellish the form, and finally a baroque (or “mannerist,” or “self-reflexive”) stage, when the form and its establishments are accented to the point where they “themselves become the “substance” or “content” of the work." ;xNLx;http://introtodh.wikispaces.com/Section3_AmericanGangsterFilms_Alex;xNLx;We then took these stages and analyzed them further by taking notes on movies and determining what factors would put a movie in a certain genre. We chose three Digital Humanities verbs to help convey our message. The verbs are; collaborate, analyze, and construct. We first collaborated within our group to figure out our scope and develop a game plan. We then took the different genres and analyzed them further by taking notes on different movies. Finally, we used our notes to construct a timeline and map using the tools we have used in class.

Everything changed for the gangster movie genre in 1934 with the creation of the Production Code. This means of censorship set out to protect American morals from films that were not just violent, but often seemed to be romanticizing the gangster at the center of their stories. Following the implementation of the Production Code, gangster movies became a tool for presenting the social message that crime does not pay. Violence and sexuality were curtailed and sometimes entirely eliminated. The Production Code also forced filmmakers to shoot new scenes that delineated the moral lesson that gangster movies now existed to serve.
