This is the History of CALL in Scotland that has Brian Farrington from the University of Aberdeen as the pioneer.

System 4 Computer

University of Abardeen invested in asystem 4 computer costing a million pounds with the memory was 32K. The University French Department adopted computer-based comprehension testing materials written by Farrington in Fortan IV.

SCETALL MEETING

A meeting of SCETALL (Scottish Council for Educational Technology and Language Learning) inviting Rex Last is held by the Director of the language centre, John Devereux at the University of St Andrews.

Presented Tutorial CALL Materials

Farrington presented tutorial CALL materials for French grammar running on line from the University of Aberdeen mainframe at the Burn French Studies Conference.

Version of Bon Accord is Running on Apple II Computer

Farrington, the research assistant Mary Crawford and a working party of teachers had a project to produce CALL materials based on an early version of Bon Accord that running on Apple II computer. This is headed by Dr. Ian Adams of Elgin Academy.

Homemade Programs of Micros

Many teachers were inspired to make homemade programs for a variety of micros by Garvin Bell, the principal lecturer in Modern Languages at Aberdeen College of Education.

CALL as Major Feature of Language Centre

Rex Last appointed professor of Modern Languages at the University Dundee. At the University of Glasgow, CALL became a major feature of the recently opened Language Centre.

Dr. Duncan Macrae- gaibson of University of Abardeen creates a beginners’ course in Old English for the BBC micro. And it is still used today in some universities.

The German department of Aberdeen University ran an integral part of the beginner’s course using Gordon Burgess’ program.

There is also another conference on Computers in Modern Languages that is attended by over a hundred teacher organized by Alastair Campbell in five days at the Aberdeen College of Education.

CALL as a Course in Postgraduated Degree

After John Higgins joined Centre for English Language Teaching at Stirling University, CALL and TESOL are launched as a course in postgraduate degree. CALL has some components such as e-mail and web language learning, software writing, concordancing and data-driven learning.
