After watching 'Life of Pi', the 23-year-old girl and her friend walk out of a movie theatre in South Delhi. They look for transport.
They find an auto, but only for part of the distance. Running out of options, the duo board a private bus at Munirka, South Delhi.
The bus has several men in it. Mistaking them all to be passengers, the two take their seats.
Nirbhaya's friend, Awindra Pandey, gets suspicious when the men on the bus shut the door. He gets into a scuffle with them when they taunt the duo for being together at night.
Soon he is overpowered and the six men turn to Nirbhaya. They brutally rape her repeatedly. Their ferocity is such that she is grievously wounded and disemboweled.
When the men are done raping and ripping out her internal organs, they throw her out. They are left bleeding profusely on the road, with no clothes on, on a December night.
The police identify four of the six accused in the case – Ram Singh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma, and Mukesh Singh — within 24 hours.
Within two days of the incident, the four men are arrested by the Delhi police.
Nirbhaya's friend, Awindra Pandey, gives his testimony to the police – revealing hitherto unknown details for the first time.
By now, the the fifth accused — the then 17-year-old — is identified and arrested at the Anand Vihar bus terminus in Delhi.
On the same day, the sixth accused Akshay Thakur is arrested in Bihar at his in-laws' home. Married and a father of a two-year-old, his wife asks for him to be shot dead if found guilty.
By now the incident has resulted in outrage and anger across India. Thousands of people demanding justice gather at India Gate and march towards Rashtrapati Bhavan. The Delhi police use water canons and lathi-charge the crowd.
Protests continue day and night in Delhi and other cities. The protesters are beaten back. They even turn on on Constable Subhash Tomar.
Doctors at AIIMS, Delhi do all they can to heal Nirbhaya's ghastly injuries, and operate on her several times. When she has a cardiac arrest, she is airlifted to Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital.
As Nirbhaya is shifted to Singapore, Constable Subhash Tomar succumbs to the injuries he sustained during the protest.
After a 12-day fight for survival, 23-year-old Nirbhaya breathes her last in Singapore. Doctors have done all they can do but her injuries are just too severe.
Nirbhaya is flown back home with her shattered family. PM Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi receive her body at the airport. She is cremated a day later.
