THE GENEVA AGREEMENTS

The Geneva Agreements in 1954 put an end to the war of Indochina wich was a French colony. Therefore Vietnam was divided in two parts, the communist state in the north led by Ho Chi Minh and the south led by Diem supported financially by the United States. The USA decided to intervene because they wanted to contain the communist expansion.

THE FIRST AMERICAN INVOLVEMENT IN VIETNAM

In late 1961 J F Kennedy sent 3.000 "military advisors" and new equipment to help the South Vietnamese government in its war against the Vietcong guerillas. It is the official beginning of the American involvement in Vietnam.

THE WITHDRAWAL OF THE AMERICAN FORCES

At a press conference Kennedy anounced that a withdrawal of American military advisors was scheduled by the end of the year.

After an attack of the American troops at sea, the U.S. Congress passes the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, giving President Johnson the power to take whatever actions he sees necessary to defend Southeast Asia.

THE ROLLING THUNDER OPERATION

The president Lyndon B. Johnson allowed the Rolling Thunder Operation to begin which was a limited but long lasting bombing offensive . Its goal was to force North Vietnam to stop supporting The Vietcongs led by Ho Chi Minh .

THE TET OFFENSIVE

North Vietnam launched the Tet Offensive attacking around 100 cities in Southern Vietnam.

THE MY LAI MASSACRE

Soldiers from the Charlie Compagny slaughtered civilians in My Lai making about two hundred casualties. Even though only one member was found guilty of war crimes, these acts raised unsettling questions about the conduct of the war .

Nixon decided to run for president a second time in 1968 because he believed that with the Democrats torn over the issue of the Vietnam War, a Republican had a good chance of winning.

THE END OF VIETNAM WAR

President Richard Nixon made a televised address on the end of Vietnam War . He announced that all American soldiers were on their way home and that thanks to Vietnamisation they prevented South Vietnam to become a communist country by force . Then he told that the United States made a peace agreement with North Vietnam. Moreover he encouraged American people to welcome warmly the 2.5 million American soldiers who thought in Vietnam .Finally he thanked American people for supporting the American government despite the contraversial aspect of the war .
