The University of Paris-Saclay: a new university for France

For more than three years, Inria and the members of the Scientific Research Foundation (Fondation de Coopération Scientifique - FCS) have been working together with the aim of creating a new federal structure bringing together leading scientific research institutions and higher education establishments to deliver a new university capable of taking its place alongside the best in the world. The University of Paris-Saclay came into being on the 31st December 2014. Destined to become a major research university, it will benefit from close ties with the largest group of universities in Europe, all located in the Greater Paris region.

French animated film flies high thanks to Inria

"Yellowbird, ready for take off" (French title: "Gus, petit oiseau, grand voyage") was released on 4 February. Beneath the surface of this contemporary cartoon, the 3D animated film took many long months for animation studio TeamTO to produce, working in association with Imagine, the Inria project team based at the Grenoble - Rhône-Alpes Research Centre. How infectious diseases spread in a hospital environment

A joint study of the interactions between all the people in a hospital, the i-Bird (Individual-based Investigation of Resistance Dissemination) experiment has helped identify the factors involved in the spread and transmission of bacteria that cause nosocomial infections. The results confirm that new technologies may be useful in analysing epidemics.

Pixyl, the startup at the cutting-edge of brain imaging analysis for healthcare

Pixyl has developed a new software solution for medical research designed to extract the maximum amount of information contained in MRI brain scans (Magnetic Resonance Imaging). This solution specifically locates, identifies and quantifies, from MRI sequences, a broad range of brain lesions related to pathologies such as multiple sclerosis, brain trauma, cerebrovascular accidents and brain tumours. Pixyl thus opens up new possibilities for the use of these imaging resources whose potential has hitherto remained under-developed in the biotechnology industry.

Logjam: a new security flaw in cryptographic algorithms

In March, the Internet was thrown into turmoil by the FREAK attack discovered by the PROSECCO team. Following the discovery of the Logjam vulnerability, Karthik Bhargavan, who heads this team (focusing on verifying the cryptographic mechanisms used to secure internet communication: cryptographic protocols, smart cards, secure flash drives, encrypted databases, etc.) and who is one of the researchers who worked on the discovery, told us about it in more detail.

Wilder: A video wall that offers a new perspective for research

The Inria Saclay - Île-de-France research centre presents Wilder, a video wall composed of 75 screens. The Wilder video wall is part of the Digiscope Equipement d’Excellence programme and is the successor to the Wild project. As well as being bigger than its predecessor, Wilder incorporates screens with virtually invisible edges. The array is designed to allow scientists to view very large images and explore complex data with astonishing comfort.

For Xavier Duportet, the adventure continues...with funding for Eligo Bioscience!

At 27 years old Xavier Duportet, the founder of Eligo Bioscience, was one of the 10 French innovators aged under 35 to be rewarded for their "revolutionary technologies" by the magazine MIT Technology Review in partnership with BNP Paribas and the Atelier BNP Paribas on Wednesday 15 April 2015. On 8 July 2015, Eligo Bioscience received 2 million Euros of funding from Seventure.

Award 20/07/2015 Xavier Leroy, Royal Society Milner Award 2016

Xavier Leroy,Gallium project team leader at the Inria Paris-Rocquencourt research centre, has been awarded the Royal Society Milner Award 2016 in recognition of his research on the OCaml functional programming language and on the formal verification of compilers. This prize, created in homage to Professor Robin Milner, rewards a European researcher for his or her exceptional contribution to computer science.

Aviz team rewarded for their work on vizualisation

The dissertations of Samuel Huron and Jeremy Boy have received the "IEEE VGTC VPG doctoral dissertation award 2015" with a First Prize for Samuel for his dissertation "Constructive Visualization: A token-based paradigm allowing to assemble dynamic visual representation for non-experts" and an Honorable Mention for Jeremy. Samuel Huron and Jeremy Boy are both Ph.D students in the Aviz team of Inria Saclay – Ile-de-France, associated with Université Paris Sud.
