Ivan and his twin sister were born in the wild in 1962. They were born in what is now known as The Democratic Republic of the Congo
Ivan and his sister are captured in the wild and shipped to Tacoma. Ivan is lost in transit. His sister dies.
For 3 years, Ivan lived with the Johnston family, eating at their table, wearing clothes, and even riding on the back of the father's motorcycle.
Ivan got too big to live like a person and the Johnston family felt they were endangered. So they sent Ivan to live at a department story in Tacoma.
In the 70's, zoo's started building what we now know as habitats. But it wasn't until 1991, that someone made a documentary about Ivan, which sparked the "Free Ivan" campaign.
A battle over where Ivan will live, finally results in his transfer to Zoo Atlanta, where Ivan touches grass again for the first time in the 1960's.
After health issues that caused Ivan to lose weight, and have stiff bones, Ivan died during surgery.
