South Korean Pop Culture: Technology and Soft Power
Past. Present. Future
This project will explore the Korean pop culture which is currently expanding globally at a rapid pace. Today, K-pop is more known for its many-members boybands and girlbands, as well as solo artists; all with peculiar styles. When it comes to K-pop, there is a discourse in opinions: love it or hate it. However, we will not be examining this side of the Korean pop culture. Rather, this project, an interactive timeline, will lead users through a selective historical journey on how the phenomenon came to be as it is today. ;xNLx;;xNLx;For its rapid expansion, Korean pop culture would have to acknowledge the tremendous benefit it had gained from the growth of technology. Before these South Korean bands and solo artists would grace the global stages, their music was being distributed, first through Youtube, then Apple music and many other streaming sites. Their music was digitalized and distributed to the world before the world were able to grasp their physical presence. What better way to understand the Korean pop culture than using an interactive timeline on the World Wide Web, where the phenomenon first began? ;xNLx;;xNLx;Disclaimer: This is a project for a college Digital Humanities class. This timeline serves as a map for individuals/groups who are interested the development of South Korea popular culture. It is a map of paths (in each event tab) which direct readers to sites with more comprehensive information on the scope. ;xNLx;
