Seven managers from five companies, including John Kjellman of Victorex Software, Bill Jelivich of Monterey Dunes, Mickey Holzman of Pajara Dunes,Jim Morris of Lake Tahoe, and Bill Futrell of Sun River, met in Monterey, CA, to attend the first meeting of what would become the VRMA, cohosted by Monterey Dunes Company and Victorex Software.
Ten vacation Rental managers gathered in Lake Tahoe for the first Annual Conference, which featured sessions on marketing and advertising and a presentation from the California Department of Real Estate.
Representatives from ten vacation rental management businesses—including one from Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina and one from Hawaii—met and established the association’s goals, objectives and leadership structure. Initial dues were set at $100 per company.
Managers from 16 vacation rental management companies met at Indian Wells Racquet Club Resort in Palm Springs, Calif. The first election was held to establish the organization as the Association of Vacation Home Rental Managers. Thirteen charter members paid $100 each, and the first Board was elected.
Articles of Incorporation filed in Oregon to formally establish the Association of Vacation Rental Home Managers.
The first Vendor Showcase was held at the association’s meeting, held at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. Representatives from 26 management companies attended.
The first Western Seminar is held in Point Reyes, Calif.; 27 members attend.
The 91-member organization changes its name to the Vacation rental Managers Association.
The first Eastern Seminar is held in Sanibel Island, Fla.
The association hits the 100-member mark.
A record 114 attendees register for the Annual Conference, held in Hilton Head, South Carolina, breaking previous attendance records and bringing together 100+ managers in one place for the first time in the organization’s history.

To help grow industry awareness, eight vacation rental management companies in the Orlando area found Discover Vacation Homes, a public relations campaign focusing on the professionally managed vacation rental industry. The campaign sees substantial growth; in 2009, the initiative’s founders give the campaign to the Vacation Rental Managers Association as a member benefit, giving members new publicity opportunities and a chance to leverage industry media outreach.
