The Albany Congress

Representatives from seven colonies met in Albany, New York. The purpose of the Albany Congress was to form an alliance with the Iroquois in fighting the French.

The End of the French and Indian War

The end of this war removed several barriers and opened a lot of new opportunities for the people.

Proclamation of 1763

The proclamation provided that all lands west of the heads of all rivers that went into the Atlantic Ocean from the west to northwest were off limits to the colonists. If any Englishmen had land within Indian territory they had to abandon it.

The Sugar Act

The Sugar Act reduced the rate of taxes on molasses from six pence to three pence per gallon. People still had to pay taxes on sugar. Grenville took measures that the duty would be strictly enforced.

Granting and applying certain stamp duties, and other duties, in the British colonies and plantations in America, defraying the expenses of defending, protecting and securing the same.

Patrick Henry

Henry was in favor of the strongest possible government for the individual states and a weak federal government. Henry's Stamp Act Resolutions was the first thing that took place in the Revolutionary war.

The Declaratory Act

This act said that colonies and plantations in America have been, and are dependent upon the imperial crown and parliament of Great Britain.

Boston Massacre

The Boston Massacre was a street fight that was between a mob and British soldiers. Several colonists were killed.

The Tea Act

Tea would be shipped to the colonies and sold for a higher price. Leaders in America felt that the act was to buy popular support for the taxes that are already enforced. Colonists would turn the tea ships back to Britain or would let the tea rot on the docks. This led to the Boston Tea Party

The Boston Tea Party

Thomas Hutchinson allowed three ships carrying tea to enter Boston Harbor. Before taxes were collected, Bostonians took action. The Bostonians stormed the ships and tossed 342 chests of tea into the water.

Paul Revere

Warned of the advancing British troops. Paul also helped with other revolutionary actions.

George Washington

George Washington was the Commander in Chief of the Continental Army.

Benedict Arnold was a commander. He was defeated but helped the war by delaying the British army.

Redcoats defeated George Washington's army in the Battle of Long island but escaped at night.

Generals George Washington, Nathanael Greene, and Israel Putnam triumphantly hold their ground at the Battle of Harlem Heights.

French Alliance

France and the United States formed an alliance with one another.

British and Americans sign preliminary Articles of Peace

The United States and Great Britain signs the Treaty of Paris
