The Sugar Act

Great Britain began it's many tax acts with this act, putting a tax on foreign sugar, coffee and indigo. This had a large effect on merchants.

The Stamp Act

The Stamp Act of 1765, which required all the colonist to pay a tax of every printed piece of paper. This mad the colonist very mad and lit the match to the Revolution.

Townshend Acts

A series of acts imposing more taxes on the American colonists on glass, lead, paints, paper, and tea. All of which were repealed except The Tea Act.

The Boston Massacre

Five Americans where shot and killed by British soldiers.

1773-12-16 11:30:00

The Boston Tea Party

Angry and frustrated at a new tax on tea, American colonists calling themselves the Sons of Liberty and disguised as Mohawk Native Americans boarded three British ships (the Dartmouth, the Eleanor, and the Beaver) and dumped 342 whole crates of British tea into Boston harbor.

The First Continental Congress

Representatives from 12 of the colonies (except Georgia) met in secret to discuss The Intolerable Acts.

Paul Revere Rides

Paul Revere rode across the countryside to Lexington to warn the colonist of the British (The Redcoats) approach. The first battle of the Revolutionary War, the battle of Lexington and Concord began immediately after his warning.

Commander in Cheif

George Washington was proclaimed Commander in Chief in attempt to unify the Colonial armies.

1776-07-04 00:00:00

The Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776 but wasn't signed until Aug 2, 1776. It's purpose was to tell the world that we were no longer subject to Great Britain.

The French Alliance

The colonist and the French align forces to appose British rule.

1780-07-11 00:00:00

Help Arrives

The French troops arrive to aid in the fight against The Redcoats.

1782-04-01 00:00:00

The Treaty of Paris

Signed in Paris, this is the treaty that officially ended the war and where Great Britain recognized the United States as an independent country.
