This timeline will show you the steps that lead to the opening of the grand building in 1864. As part of the Explore Your Archive campaign 2014, the timeline also gives you a flavour of what you can discover in the archival collections of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.
The Fraternity of Physicians of Trinity Hall was founded by Dr John Stearne, Professor of Medicine in Trinity College Dublin, in 1654.
From 1680 to 1818, the College of Physicians was without a permanent home.
In 1818 the College were given a room in Sir Patrick Dun's Hospital on Grand Canal Street, Dublin.
On 1860 the College bought the premises of the Kildare Street Club for £5000.
In November 1860, a fire destroyed the Kildare Street Club building before the College could move in.
Having chosen a design, the College made a call for tenders from builders in late 1861.
As with all building projects the construction of the new No. 6 Kildare Street took longer than expected.
Having gained possession of the building, there was still the question of the final bill.
On 15 July 1864 RCPI held their first College meeting in their newly built home on Kildare Street.
In 1874 the rear premises surviving from the 1860 fire were connected to the main college building.
Today the building of No. 6 Kildare Street continues to be used by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland for its main ceremonial and educational events.
