150th anniversary of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland building

This year the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland celebrated 150 years in the beautiful building of 6 Kildare Street, Dublin.

The Fraternity of Physicians of Trinity Hall

The Fraternity of Physicians of Trinity Hall was founded by Dr John Stearne, Professor of Medicine in Trinity College Dublin, in 1654.

The Peripatetic College

From 1680 to 1818, the College of Physicians was without a permanent home.

Sir Patrick Dun's Hospital

In 1818 the College were given a room in Sir Patrick Dun's Hospital on Grand Canal Street, Dublin.

Funding by Debentures

On 1860 the College bought the premises of the Kildare Street Club for £5000.

A New Building for No. 6 Kildare Street

In November 1860, a fire destroyed the Kildare Street Club building before the College could move in.

Call for Tenders

Having chosen a design, the College made a call for tenders from builders in late 1861.

Building Delays

As with all building projects the construction of the new No. 6 Kildare Street took longer than expected.

The Final Bill

Having gained possession of the building, there was still the question of the final bill.

The First College Meeting

On 15 July 1864 RCPI held their first College meeting in their newly built home on Kildare Street.

The Racquet Court

In 1874 the rear premises surviving from the 1860 fire were connected to the main college building.

No. 6 Kildare Street today

Today the building of No. 6 Kildare Street continues to be used by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland for its main ceremonial and educational events.
