This is my digital literacy timeline which chronicles how I interacted with digital/non-digital media throughout my life.

Frog and Toad are Friends? Or are they?
The first book I ever read was Frog and Toad are Friends in Kindergarten.

Galloping Ponies
The first book I ever wrote was about horses in Kindergarten. It consisted of me narrating my tales as an acclaimed rider (my favorite hobby and sport at the time) and riding a horse named Flame. It probably consisted of many spelling errors and horrible syntax.

Stacks on Stacks!
My first library card was to Little Falls library in Bethesda, MD. This was important to me because it opened up a world of basically unlimited books! The possibilities were endless and I found myself checking out 10 books at a time!

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
I won my second grade spelling bee on the word pseudomorph. I'm 100% sure I didn't know what that meant until much later on in life. According to google, a pseudomorph is "In mineralogy, a pseudomorph is a mineral or mineral compound that appears in an atypical form, resulting from a substitution process in which the appearance and dimensions remain constant, but the original mineral is replaced by another." This spelling bee transformed my life because it made me passionate about words and enhanced my passion for reading.

She was a girl who could not wait!
The first audio book I ever received was from my mom. The book was Ramona Quimby which I loved. I would say that this audio book spurned my love for reading more because it made me enjoy the stories for the story. Something about it changed the way I viewed novels, even physical books, in general.

A CATASTROPHE of a book!
In second grade I wrote a book called Disaster Girl and my teacher told me to submit it to a contest for young writers. The story was about my little sister, Emily, who I had a special connection to because she was my first female sibling. She was a complete mess as a baby and got food everywhere! So as you can imagine the illustrations were quite funny.

Type to suffer
Probably the most important development of all was when I took a typing class in 4th grade. I'm pretty sure my mom had to drag me there, but in the end it was the most worthwhile class because it taught me a skill that I am forever grateful for.

Cumulonimbus
The first powerpoint I ever made was in 4th grade. The powerpoint was about the different types of clouds. This was an important development for me because it was the first time I brought in new media while doing a project for school.

Horsegirl515
After begging and pleading my mom to let me get an instant message, we compromised on an e-mail address. My domain: horsegirl515@verizon.net. This was a testament to my love of horses and represented the first time I was able to communicate with others through the internet.

Live. Love. Learning.
The first textbook I received was in 5th grade. I was really excited about getting a Spanish textbook because it meant I was growing up. I think that this spurned my love of learning and I remember reading through the whole, glossy textbook when I got it.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away
I would cite this as a really big development in my life because it catalyzed my use of online media. Following this, I got a Facebook and a twitter and used online sites to help with school.

*Insert Jewish stuff here*
The first time I read from the Torah was when I became an adult in the Jewish community. Although I was only 12, I learned how to communicate through another language and had to revert back to an ancient text. In contrast to the other events on here, this event marked me going back and partaking in a tradition that is 1000s of years old. I think that reading from the Torah allowed me to come into my Jewish heritage.

My decline in productivity: Facebook
I cited getting a Facebook as an event in my life because I think it transformed the way I communicated with the world around me. From those joke pages that we ALL liked in 7th grade to chatting with friends across the world, my Facebook shaped the way others perceived me. This allowed me to realize the importance of my digital presence and how Facebook can be used a crucial digital tool.

Tweet tweet and chirp chirp
I think that getting a twitter allowed me to communicate with the world around me in a new way, more notably in 140 characters or less. Additionally, getting a twitter showed me the way in which social media can affect a person or a brand.

Real World stuff!
I got a job at Former Senator John Kerry's office on Capitol Hill when I was a junior in high school. I had to go to briefings, specifically about health care and climate change, as those were the staffers that I primarily worked closely with. After the briefings I had to write memos detailing the key points and facts from the briefings. This was the first time I had to write something concrete and formal for a job.

The time I gained 10 pounds
In 2013 I took over a local bakery's social media campaign utilizing Facebook, Twitter, Hootsuite, Pinterest, and Instagram to gain views and recognition. The goal of this campaign was to establish a fan base so that we could launch a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for a storefront. Our kickstarter campaign started in May of 2013 and by June 2013 we raised $74,000 for the storefront.
