This timeline will outline the progression of Soap Operas throughout time from the 1930s up until today!

Clara, Lu and Em

Clara, Lu and Em was one of the very first Soap Operas to ever be made. First broadcast in 1930 this Soap was produced specifically to target the large market of women working as housewives. This programme was broadcast on the radio during the day. It featured the lives of 3 women and attracted its audience as during the day they had time to listen to the programme and they would be able to relate to the 3 girls in the programme as well as some of the events and situations that they took place in.

The Guiding Light

The Guiding Light broadcast in 1937 was the first pioneer of the daytime soap opera. On June 30th 1952 The Guiding Light made the transition between radio broadcast to a TV broadcast. During WW2 a lot more soaps had been produced however The Guiding Light remained highly popular and by the early 60s there were no more radio Soaps being broadcasted in the USA due to the increased popularity of the television.

As The World Turns

As the World Turns is the second longest soap opera to ever have been produced. It was run for 54 years. Produced purely in New York City this soap opera was extremely popular. This was the first soap opera to ever be shown for 30 minutes (previous soaps were 15 minutes).

The Edge of Night

As the World Turns and The Edge of Night were both aired on the same day and both were the first soaps to be 30 minutes long. The Edge of Night included concepts such as: mystery, crime and drama.

Coronation Street

Coronation Street is one of the major soap operas available to view in Britain along with Eastenders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks. Settings within Coronation Street include: terraced houses, café, corner shop, newsagents, textile factory and the Rovers pub.

The Doctors

5280 episodes of The Doctors was produced and this was the point in history that institutions began to realise that Soap Operas were very popular and many of them had great potential for significant amounts of profit. Based in a hospital some of the storylines included: murder, depression, drugs and illness.

Emmerdale

Produced by ITV Yorkshire Emmerdale is the second oldest British Soap Opera ever. When Emmerdale was first broadcast it was shown in the afternoon; this changed in 1978. Additionally Emmerdale was a seasonal soap however this changed in December 1988 where it is now shown weekdays at either 7 or 8pm.

Dallas

This soap includes a variety of different families experiencing new and different situations. It is specifically concentrated upon marriage and wealth. In 2010 TNT decided to reintroduce Dallas back onto television as it has been included in TIME magazine's top 100 best soaps. The re-development of this Soap Opera was continued from where Dallas had ended in 1991.

First aired on BBC1 Eastenders follows the domestic and professional fictional lives of a range of characters. Storylines include: drugs, alcohol, teenage pregnancy and murder.

Hollyoaks

Hollyoaks broadcasted on Channel 4 has a target audience of young people aged between 16 and 35. This soap has evolved greatly throughout time at for example when it started in 1995 it consisted of only 7 main characters. Today it now has over 50 regular characters and this has allowed the storylines and narrative to develop ensuring it meets the needs of its audience.
