Feminist Movements and Modern Poetry
My project is on feminist movements and women’s rights; I follow the movement for the duration of the modernist era. These movements are listed with poems from female writers that reflect the events occurring in feminism, women's rights, and women in politics during 19th and 20th centuries.
These are not accurate dates, the year is the more important for this resource.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott organized the first Women Right's Convention in Seneca Falls, NY where 68 women and 32 men sign the Declaration of Sentiment that set the agenda for the women rights movements to follow.

Belva Lockwood is the first woman to be selected candidate for presidency in the National Equal Rights Party.

Senate Vote on Women Suffrage
For the first time the US Senate vote on women suffrage. It loses 34 to 16, 25 Senators do not participate.

Dickinson's poem 632 is reflective of women empowerment as they begin to share their voice and openly express their opinions. Women began to show the world that they are intelligent human beings, more than just domestic task handlers.

My life close twice before its close-
Dickinson's poem 1732 addresses the two lives closed to African American women at this time. First, their life is closed off from white supremacy because they are black. Second, their life is closed off to masculine opportunity because they are women.

Gertrude Stein's piece "A Brown" from "Tender Buttons" illustrates this idea of black women coming together and pressing for change.

Women's Congressional Union
Alice Paul and Lucy Burns organize the Congressional Union, later known as the National Women's Party. They aimed to draw public attention to women suffrage.

H.D.'s poem "Sea Rose" identifies with women's progression over time. At first they are delicate until life roughens them up but there is still the question of whether they can compete with men

Garden
H.D.'s poem "Garden" is reflective of many barriers women had to cross in order to succeed, "rose, cut in rock". At this same time this poem reflects the barrier (heat) between men and women and how difficult it was to move past.

Gertrude Stein's poem "Why Do You Feel Differently" captures the question of gender equality during this time while highlighting the differences between men and women. This poem reflects women's desire for equality, "to be pleased and to please."

H.D.'s poem "Helen" is representative of men's attitude towards women at this time. The poem focuses on physical characteristics of women. During this time men valued women's appearance and despised their opinion.

Dickinson's poem 754 illustrates women's dependence on men. Women had no voice or opinion. Their helpless desire for power and equality is present in this poem.

Gertrude Stein's "Stanza LXXXIII," excerpt form "Stanza in Meditation," addresses the idea of women gaining a voice and eventually being heard after being silenced for so long.
