The history of American Education is very unique. Although our education system was influenced heavily by the Europeans it is an American creation.

John Calvin

A French theologian who broke from the Catholic Church disagreeing with the many policies. He supported a two track school system, 1 track for the commoners and one track for prospective leaders. This system was brought by the Europeans to the new world.

1st Printing Press at Harvard University

The first printing press in America was set up at Harvard College. A newspaper, almanac and Bible verse, were the first items printed.

Georgia is Founded

Europe used the New World as a refuge for many of its poor. Many of those who founded Georgia had been in debtor’s prison in Europe and were sent to America so that England did not have to provide for them any longer.

Franklin's Academy Opens

The first American Academy was opened in Philadelphia by Franklin. Franklin’s vision for a practical school, with limited attention to Latin and Greek was not successful. It was rechartered in 1753 as the College, Academy, and Charitable School of Philadelphia.

The French and Indian War

The war was fought for land control between the French and the English. The Great Britain won substantial territorial gains. But the cost of the war led to the colonist discontent and eventually the Revolutionary War.

The Blackboard was Invented

James Pillans invents the black board, George Barron was the first American instructor to use a black board in the US. (1801) This changed the way instructors presented lessons. Lessons were not taught using solely text books and slates but not class discussions could be introduced using the black board.

First Infant School opens

Taught by women and were designed for poor children ages 2-7. Designed to teach morals and basic literacy because it was believed the children would not receive any formal education because of their financial status.

Louisville, Kentucky appoints the first School Superintendent

This was an American creation. Originally, R.W. Haskins title was the Agent of the Board of School Visitors. This was the beginning of teacher supervision in the United States.

Reconstruction

During the post-Civil War period (Reconstruction) many Northern church leaders and educators moved to the South to educate the newly freed slaves.

Emergence of the Junior High School

The first Junior High School in the United States was Indianola Junior High School in Columbus, Ohio. The Junior High was opened to separate the middle level students from their elementary and high school counterparts.
