Vesuvius

Mt Vesuvius erupts, devastating Pompeii. Date August 24, 79 AD Type: composite DRE: 2.6 cubed kilometers. During this eruption, the citizens were caught completely off guard. The eruption lasted for about 24 hours. During this time, pyroclastic flows composed of extremely hot poisonous gas, rocks and ash. It was so hot, that the citizens' body fluids instantly vaporized. Along with this, they would've choke on the ash. The destruction covered 200 square miles.

Krakatoa

Krakatoa erupts. Date August 27 1883 Type: Composite( aka stratovolcano is a volcano created by lava and ash building on top in layers) DRE:6-7 kilometers cubed During this huge eruption in 1883, the volcano killed 36417 people. This eruption was so major, you could hear it from 4500 kilometers away, and it created gigantic tsunamis. Krakatoa can be found in Indonesia

Merapi

Mt. Merapi erupts. Date: May 1st 2006 Type: Composite (Stratovolcano) DRE: 5.3 million cubic meters. Merapi volcano is one of the world's most active and dangerous volcanoes in Indonesia. Eruptions occur anywhere from 2 to 5 years at a time and have low gas pressure. Merapi is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia and has produced more pyroclastic flows than any other volcano in the world. A pyroclastic flow is when a lot of magma and ash explode out of a volcano. Merapi has been active for about 10,000 years.

Mt St. Helens

Mount St. Helens erupts. Date: February 17 2013 DRE:1,000 cubic meters Type: Composite(stratovolcano.) About 57 people died from this explosion. Mount St. Helens can be found in Washington state. Mount St. Helens was a dormant volcano for about 123 years. On March 20, 1980, a chain of earthquakes told scientists that the volcano was active a gain. The Native Americans living in the area called it the "smoking mountain"

Sakurajima

Sakurajima erupts. Date: August 18, 2013 Type: Composite (Stratovolcano) Sakurajima is a very active volcano in Japan. In fact, This is the 500th eruption just year. The ash that spewed from this eruption reached 16,400 in the air. Unlike the Vesuvius eruption, the people that lived nearby this volcano were prepared with umbrellas and masks.
