A heavily inebriated 16-year old Steubenville girl is publicly and repeatedly sexually violated at a party, after having been roofied during the transport there. The victim is transported to various parties, undressed, photographed, sexually assaulted and digitally and orally penetrated. The victim later woke on August 12 in a basement living room without her clothes or personal effects. Main offenders Quarterbark Trent Mays and wide receiver Ma'lik Richmond were the main offenders. Mays later attempted to cover up his actions and pleaded with the victim not to press charges. The acts were documented on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube recordings and text messages. These formed the basis of the investigation. Ohio investigators later confiscated and analysed 15 cellphones, two iPads and hundreds of text messages, along with interviewing almost 60 people.
ABC employee Gillian "Jill" Meagher leaves Bar Etiquette in Brunswick at 1:30 am Saturday morning, and begins the five minute walk back to the flat she shares with husband Tom. CCTV footage captures the last known images of Jill on the phone to brother Michael McKeon outside Duchess Boutique bridal shop. Adrian Ernest Bayley is alleged by police to be the man in the blue hoodie seen speaking to her.
Jill Meagher's workmates take to Twitter to help in the search for her. A Facebook page titled "Help Us Find Jill Meagher" is also created. By September 27, it has reached over 100, 000 likes.
41-year old Coburg man Adrian Bayley leads police to where Jill Meagher's body is buried in a shallow grave at Gisborne South. Meagher's broken Vodafone SIM card is also discovered at the bottom of a washing machine in Bayley's house by his de facto partner. Bayley is charged with rape and murder and held in custody to await trial.
A public march is organised and conducted with a crowd of 30,000 walking down Sydney Road in memory of Meagher, where she was last seen before her abduction.
Social media users are warned to be careful with what they post, so as not to jeopardize court proceedings. Ted Bailieu, then Victorian premier, says that legislative change might be required to address social media's impact on the jury system.
22 year old Bacchus Marsh woman, Sarah Cafferkey vanishes after reportedly spending time with a friend. A Facebook page is set up, in a similar manner to Jill Meagher's.
Sarah Cafferkey last seen at a friend's house in Bacchus Marsh on November 10. Ms Dickson reports Sarah as a missing person. On November 14, police issue a public plea for information about Sarah.
Sarah Cafferkey's 2001 Astra sedan is found in Owen St, Maribyrnong. The homicide squad becomes involved late November 17, when Ms Cafferkey's remains are found in a bin at a Point Cook house.
47 year old Bacchus Marsh man Steven is charged with the killing of Sarah CAfferkey. Homicide detectives charge the man with a single count of murder after his arrest at 12:30 pm in Hawthorn. Hunter is taken into custody without incident. Police release a statement to remind the community that "comments on social media sites may potentially affect the outcome of court matters relating to this investigation."
