Tiki-Toki is an amazing tool for creating beautiful interactive timelines (if we do say so ourselves!). There is loads you can do with a free account, but there's even more you can do with a Bronze subscription.
So what exactly makes the Bronze subscription different from the free account? To start with, you can create up to five timelines on your account, whereas you can only create one timeline with the free account. This can be really useful if you'd like to have some extra timelines to test designs, or if you need to have timelines in mutliple languages. This is also very useful if you'd simply like to create more than one timeline!
Another key difference is that you can embed your timeline(s) on your own website(s). This means you can share your beautiful, fully interactive timeline with your readers without them having to leave your website! With the Bronze subscription, you will have access to an embed code on each timeline where you can adjust the width and height so it will fit nicely. You are given up to 5,000 embeddable views a month to use across all your timelines (the views are reset at the end of every month). An embeddable view is used each time the page where your timeline is displayed is loaded.
You can also use group edit, which isn't available with the free account. This is an incredibly powerful tool that allows a trusted group of people to contribute to your timeline. If you're working on a group project, this means participants can contribute their own stories (their names are displayed on their stories) but they can't edit others' stories. The owner of the timeline retains full editing access to the whole timeline. We'll do another blog post just about group editing soon!
Another amazing benefit to having a Bronze subscription is being able to upload up to 100 images to our servers for each timeline. Let's say you're creating an in-depth family history timeline and you've got all these treasured pictures saved on your computer. The easiest way to get them onto your timeline is to upload them directly, which you can do with a Bronze subscription. If you have a free account, you would need to find a third-party service to upload them to and then link to them from the timeline.
The last really useful feature of a Bronze subscription is that you are not limited to the 200 stories per timeline available with a free account. You can go significantly higher than that, though we don't recommend having more than 500-750 stories on a single timeline, as this can make the timeline animate slowly. If you have loads of stories or events, we'd recommend splitting them across multiple timelines (which you can do with a Bronze account), perhaps one timeline for each decade or year.
So how do you sign up for a Bronze subscription? The first thing you need to do is sign up for a free acount. Once you've done that and you're logged in on your main account page, scroll down and click on the 'Buy now' under the Bronze option. You'll be taken to PayPal to complete the subscription, and then returned to Tiki-Toki. You can cancel at any time by logging on your PayPal account, or by emailing help@tiki-toki.com at least a week before your next payment date. Alternatively, if you'd rather not pay by PayPal, we can invoice for a year's subscription - just contact hello@tiki-toki.com.
So who is the Bronze subscription meant to be used by? The Bronze subscription is meant for use by individuals (let's hear it for family history timelines and passion projects!) or small community groups (such as local history clubs). It's also meeant for students - if your teacher has signed up for a teacher subscription and given you a class code, your account will be turned into a Bronze subscription (but will only be active as long as your teacher's subscription is active). Commercial organisations should use our silver subscriptions or Timeline Licenses.
It's worth clarifying what happens if you choose to revert to a free account from a Bronze subscription. When that happens, you will lose access to Bronze features and functionality. That means you will only have access to one timeline (if you have more than one timeline, you will only be able to access the first timeline you created, but you can delete other timelines so you only have one left), and will not be able to embed your timeline on your own website. Group edit will also be unavailable, and any images uploaded will stop appearing on your timeline. Please note that your additional timelines and images are not deleted from our servers, but will only be accessible if you re-subscribe.
While there is a lot you can do with free account on Tiki-Toki, there is even more you can do with a Bronze subscription! This includes creating up to five timelines, embedding the timeline(s) on your own website, using group edit, and uploading images directly to Tiki-Toki.
